Un peu d'histoire
" Once upon a time, there was an old village of beautiful stone.
He(It) had the shape of a boat.
In Provençal, he was called Sant Paou. "
André Verdet.

This jewel of our expensive Provence was not made in one day; the decoration(set) is planted, as motionless and unchanging, nevertheless shaped during centuries by Mother Nature and the hand of the Man.

In the period of the high classic antiquity(antique), two major civilizations are going to succeed one another, putting the foundations of our Mediterranean culture.

The Greeks, the fine sailors(browsers), colonize regions lining the Mediterranean Sea and the big ports(bearings) (mainly Marseille, Monaco, Nice and Antibes as regards our coast(ribs)), and introduces the cultures of the olive tree and the vineyard(vine) which will become the nerve of the local agriculture(farming).

Leading Romain a real " conquest of the world " invests(surrounds) the region in the IIth century before J.C. and impose their rigor in military, legal, administrative material(subject). They build big cities(estates) and build Roman ways, contribute to the structuralization of the regional economy.

In the fall of Roman Empire (476 after J.C.), Provence will cross a period disturbed, sowed(scattered) with epidemics and with barbaric invasions, ruining the low(weak) economic and demographic balance. It is this insecurity which urges the farmers to gather(collect) and which leads(drives) to the emergence of these " perched villages ".

Saint Paul will be born in the XIth century and soon the castrum Santo Paulo (Saint Paul's castle), only the donjon of which remains, will dominate the village.

During the second half of the Middle Ages, the region will be administered by Counts de Provence among whom two, Count Raymond Béranger V at the beginning of the XIIIth century and the 1st Countess Jeanne of Anjou in the XIVth, will mark the history(story) of our village

By becoming Count de Provence, by the acquisition of the comtaux rights of Soft, his wife, Raymond Béranger 1st allows Saint Paul's castrum to appear time(weather) dark.

In 1227, Raymond Béranger V, Count de Provence, grants(tunes) privileges and municipal franchisings(franknesss) as well as a market. Saint Paul becomes a city of notable.

Jeanne 1st, Countess de Provence, Queen of Naples grants the custom(usage) of waters of Malvan to Saint Paul.

According to a legend, this Queen would have knotted(tied) a romantic idyll with one page of the name of Aubépin, that she would have found a stabbed day. Since, this place would be decorated with flowers by a bush of red hawthorns.

During his reign, Provence and Saint Paul know the plague.

In the death of the Queen, Saint Paul capitulates and joins at home of Anjou.

In 1418, an act emanating from Louis III considers Saint Paul of " Royal City " translating its military, administrative importance and the direct dependence of the sovereignty of Comte-Roi.

The union of Provence in France, prepared by Louis XI and King René, having been proclaimed on January 15th, 1482, Saint Paul is henceforth French.

In the Renaissance, it is the ceaseless assaults of Charles the Fifth that are going to arouse the creation of the Loan Squared by François 1st. King decides to make build modern ramparts to Saint Paul. Chosen master(teacher) of work is François de Mandon de Saint-Rémy. These constructions were not without consequences for the inhabitants. Indeed, numerous houses were demolished and the inhabitants had to leave in the neighbouring villages.

Since the end the Empire, the fortifications had been abandoned(given up). However, in 1832 a committee of the military engineering decided to restore them. In 1870, Saint Paul is demilitarized. Ramparts are brought under the hammer. For public purposes, the mayor of the municipality negotiates with the French government to avoid their demolition. In 1872, the mayor thus buys his ramparts for 400 Francs!

Under the Mediterranean luminosity, the impressive ramparts, raising itself in the middle of the Provençal campaign(countryside), shape a prestigious site which, little by little, with the charm arising from Côte d'Azur, is going to attract(entice) the artists and the tourists. The development of the new communications such as the streetcar as well as the climatic conditions, and the environment benefiting from an exceptional light were important assets(trump cards) when in the development of Côte d'Azur. This frame(executive) and this light were source of inspiration for numerous artists.

Place de boule
The Maeght museum foundation which possesses one of the most important collections of paints(paintings), sculptures, drawings and graphic works of art of the XXth century (Bonnard, Pointer, Calder, Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Léger, Mir ó).
The most famous parts(parties) of petanques were born between Henri Salvador, Yves Montant or Caesar(César). But here, we play boules if we want either we walk on ramparts by looking at the méditerranée and at the Alps.
The artists are so many to have taken up this village that every stone of the medieval city(estate) sings the praises of their works. The colors of the campaign(countryside) and the light of the quotation of azure attract(entice) at the dawn of the XXth century the biggest painters of the planet such Signac, Picasso, Tobiasse, Zivo or Dufy …Then they are poets, writers, sculptors, as jacques Prévert, James Baldwin, Marc Chagall, Calder, Fernand Leger or Soutine. The list is so long lovers of Saint Paul that by visiting the foundation of Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, we discover the works made specially by giacommetti, antagonize, bury, Miro, Tal Coat and inaugurated by André Malraux for the city(estate). Folon decorated even quite specially the chapel with it of penitent white. No city(estate) to the world can boast of having such a concentration of artists creative as saint Paul.
A source of inspiration and a real alive tradition. Because the artists nowadays are called: Kiki Giuliana, Michel Degay, Alarçon Dalvin, Zita Landy, Paul Antonescu, Anou Paolini, Guy Pieters, Dung Bui, Vladimir Rustinoff, Joël Guyot. All of real institutions recognized on the market of the international art.
Contemporary art, singular, naïve or representational art. To Saint Paul, the talented artists are next(go alongside) to Saint Phalle's Koons, Niky, to Modigliani, to Caesar(César) or to Ben.
We cannot leave untold all the singers who immortalized Saint Paul and who lived there or who still live there:
It is "A Saint-Paul-de-Vence" whom sings Yves Montand, Charles Trenet and National 7 or still Michel Sardou in Popular waltz of Broadway.
Jacques Prévert who lived to has the end of the fifties wrote Jumble. He(it) will make friends with André Verdet the other holy artist paulois general-purpose (poet, painter, musician and cosmologue). Samivel, Jean Giono and James Baldwin also lived to Saint Paul. Other writers as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Colette, André Gide, Paul Valéry, the list is far from being exhaustive lived(lay) in Saint Paul.
The movie actors are not either outdone! Since the famous marriage of Simone Signoret and Yves Montand in 1951 until that, more recent of Arielle Dombasle and Bernard-Henry Lévy in 1994, one in counted: Lino Ventura, Fernandel, Gérard Philipe and even live at present Michel Boujenah or Aldo Maccione there.
So was born the Petanque which acquired real letters of nobility by making of artists so famous as the painters Chagall and Matisse, the sculptor Mancini, or still the comedians Fernandel, Yves Montand and Lino Ventura of real followers. These last ones, admitted to delay sometimes the sessions of shooting of a movie which took place on the official list of Azure or in the studio of Victorine to be able to take advantage of their endless parts(parties). " When a part(party) of balls begins to saint Paul, it is all the village which is reborn " said Marcel Pagnol.
1920: A pleiad of painters, initiators of the schools of the XXth century, is welcomed there: Matisse, Soutine, Chagall, Renoir, Signac, Modigliani, Dufy, but also writers such as Gide, Giono, Cocteau, Pregreen, then later film-makers and scriptwriters: Clouzot, Cayatte, Audiard as well as French and international stars: Yves Montand, Lino Ventura, Simone Signoret, Romy Schneider, Roger Moore, Tony Curtis …
